Art

Savannah is one of America’s great art cities, shaped in no small part by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) — a globally renowned institution that enrolls over 14,000 students and infuses the city with constant creative energy. The Telfair Museums form the cultural backbone of the scene, comprising the Telfair Academy (one of the oldest art museums in the South), the striking Jepson Center for the Arts with over 7,500 square feet of contemporary galleries, and the Owens-Thomas House. Strolling through City Market in the Historic District reveals a vibrant cluster of working studios and galleries, where you can find everything from Gullah-Geechee-inspired works to abstract painting and sculptural ceramics. The Savannah Art Association, Georgia’s oldest continuously operating art association, showcases member work in rotating exhibits throughout the city. And the SCAD-hosted Lucas Theatre for the Arts, a beautifully restored 1921 Italianate gem, hosts performances and events year-round.

Events

Savannah celebrates with Southern flair and surprising range. The undisputed highlight of the cultural calendar is the Savannah Music Festival, held each spring over nearly two weeks across historic venues including churches, theaters, and gardens throughout the district. Georgia’s largest musical arts event, it draws world-class performers across jazz, classical, blues, folk, and global music. The Savannah Film Festival, hosted by SCAD each October, brings red-carpet premieres, celebrity appearances, and film debuts to the Historic District. March belongs to one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States — Savannah’s parade draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and turns the city’s famous squares into one giant, joyful street party. Come holiday season, the Savannah Lighted Boat Parade on the river and the Christmas Market at Plant Riverside District bring a European-inspired warmth to the waterfront.

Savannah Writers

Conrad Aiken (1889–1973) — One of America’s most celebrated poets and a Pulitzer Prize winner, Aiken was born and raised in Savannah, and the city shaped him profoundly — both its beauty and its darkness. His childhood home on Oglethorpe Avenue is now a memorial garden, and his grave in Bonaventure Cemetery has become a literary pilgrimage site. Visitors leave pennies on his bench-shaped gravestone, a nod to Aiken’s own love of watching the ships pass on the river.

Flannery O’Connor (1925–1964) — Born in Savannah and raised in the city before her family moved to Milledgeville, O’Connor is one of the towering figures of American literature. Her short stories — wickedly funny, grotesque, and morally charged — are essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the Southern Gothic tradition. Her childhood home on Lafayette Square is a major local historic site, preserved as a museum where visitors can see the room where one of America’s greatest writers began her life. Her collection A Good Man Is Hard to Find remains one of the most acclaimed short story collections ever published.

John Berendt — A New York journalist who moved to Savannah and spent years immersed in its eccentricities, Berendt’s 1994 true-crime masterpiece Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil became one of the most celebrated nonfiction books of the decade — spending an extraordinary four years on the New York Times bestseller list. The book made Savannah itself a character, and the city has never looked back. Mercer House, the book’s central setting, remains one of Savannah’s most visited landmarks.
